How to apply for a Myanmar visa in Bangkok

Planning a trip to Myanmar? Then you probably already know that you need a visa. For many tourists visiting Myanmar, this country is usually a part of a bigger trip which most likely includes Thailand. If you plan to visit Bangkok before going to Myanmar, you shouldn’t worry about getting your visa in advance. Well there is an option to apply for Myanmar visa online but this is not available for all nationalities. So if you don’t have a possibility to apply for an e-visa and plan to visit Bangkok before going to Myanmar, keep on reading, this article is for you.

Where to apply?

Every foreign citizen has the right to apply for a Myanmar visa at the Myanmar embassy in Bangkok. The embassy is open from Monday to Friday from 9:00 – 12:00 and visa collection is from 15:30 to 16:30.

How to get there

The Myanmar Embassy is located on 132 N Sathon Rd, Silom, Bang Rak, Bangkok 10500, Thailand. It’s quite far from the centre so using bus or even taxi on the busy Bangkok streets could take a lot of time. The easiest and fastest way is to use the skytrain. The closest station to the embassy is called Surasak BTS. After arrival walk down the stairs and walk along the pavement back for couple hundred metres. The street is very busy and the pavement is mostly filled with local merchants. However the embassy is well marked and you can’t miss it.

Application process

Once you arrive at the Myanmar embassy in Bangkok you will receive a form you need to fill in at the reception desk. You will be also get a waiting number so while you wait you will have enough time to fill the form.

Together with the filled form, you will also need your original passport, 2 passport photos on a white background and you will need to pay a visa fee which was 1600 Baht for a single entry tourist visa at the moment of our application. The fee might differ for different visa types. Make sure to have some cash with you as they do not accept credit cards. In case you don’t have passport photos with you there is a building called S&B Tower with copy centre and a self picture machine nearby where you can quickly sort that out. It’s located on Pan Road approximately 200 metres from the embassy.

Counter for visa application at Myanmar embassy in Bangkok

We strongly recommend to visit the embassy 15-30 min before the counter opens in order to avoid a long line. Also make sure to read the information on each of the counters and wait in front of the correct one. The last one on the right (again this was the one we needed at the time, make sure to find the right one in case anything has changed). A good thing is that you have priority as a self applicant. It helped us to skip the huge line of tourist agencies sorting out numerous visas for their customers.

Collecting your visas

Please note that you will need to leave your passport at the counter as your visa will be stamped in it. The procedure usually takes 2 working days and you will be able to collect your visa the next day. Keep the paper you will receive at the counter and don’t forget to bring it with you. You will not be able to collect your passport without it! That’s it! Now you have sorted your visa and you are ready for your Myanmar adventures!
